frenzied feline and a new project

synchronicity is a strange thing, you know. i came across this little frenzied feline while trying to figure out how to describe this past week. he demonstrates exactly how my week has been... chasing about, trying to fit unexpected work shifts into my schedule. trying to stay ahead of everything so i don't get run over. all the while, uncertain how my little paws are actually reaching the pedals!

needless to say, i haven't done a lick of stitching this week. though i have been gathering raw materials for another project. remember that i started remodelling my studio a while back? i came across a little idea that i like so much, i'm thinking of including elements of it throughout my house!

pallets? is that seriously a stack of old pallets? yes. yes it is! i've been gathering pallets like a mad man (and i'm quite certain my neighbors have all decided that i've taken leave of my senses as they've watched me haul these buggers in by the truck load). now, before you begin nodding your noggins and agreeing with my mislead, but well-meaning neighbors, you have to see this:

the wall in this picture is constructed entirely of pallets! keeping in mind that i have been slowly but surely turning my home into a rustic getaway with barn wood, vintage artifacts, plank flooring, and the like... i think this wall treatment will be absolutely perfect to finish off the effect!  of course, it's going to take a lot of time and a lot of work...dismembering pallets, sorting slats, mixing colors, installing and so on. but i'm going to simply approach it as though i'm salvaging fabric and creating a story cloth. though, perhaps, of a much larger nature, and in this case, one slat at a time! so, if you see project updates interspersed between the cloth whispering, you'll understand...and hopefully not send those nice young men in their clean white coats to take me away in a butterfly net!

  4. I've seen a bit of the palette craze on and around the web... I like it! I love that these are so often left to rot, but now have been used as wonderful, reclaimed, patinaed wood. I'm currently searching for some old apple crates to use as shelving in my new studio, but so far haven't come across them. Good luck, sounds like your house is just the kind of rustic gettaway I'd love! And I was thinking that this project is a bit like stitching...

If you need a good cat laugh and haven't seen Maru the cat before... I guarantee a good tearing laugh (at least this video does if for me... really GOOFY and strange cat!)

Hope you get some creative time soon, whether with cloth or palettes!

    1. yes. falls right in line with what so many of us have been doing with cloth! i've seen some lovely shelving done in pallets, too, if you can't find those apple crates.

thanks for the good laugh with that goofy cat! :)

    2. i forgot to mention that maru reminded me of my dad's seeing-eye dog, yoshi! yoshi is a golden retriever who loves to stick his head into those orange road hazard cones and wander around bumping into trees and rocks and fences and walls and things! one can't help but stop and wonder if yoshi and maru simply have a more interesting view of the world. kinda makes me yearn for a road hazard cone big enough to stick my head it... ha!

    3. Haven't you tried it? If I remember correctly, my head FITS into one of those cone-thingies!! ( Don't ask.. I think maybe I was at a Dead show...)

  5. Love the look of those soft warm grey browns, rather like a bit of ecodyed fabric, cut up and patched together again .... would you fit in a butterfly net though .... if they do come? ;-)

    1. true enough! i've seen then cut up and "patched together" in other patterns, too...but think i'm still going to stick with simplicity here.

i guess it would depend upon how big the net was?

  6. HA Joe ! I think a lot of people will look for some time at the cat !!! (I did) Love your "pallets" wall.
In Holland there is a disigner, Piet Hein Eek, who makes (for quite some time now) cupboards and other furniture out of old wood.

  7. Joe, your wall is beautiful! I built a bookcase out of pallets from a golf shop. The golf carts came on oak pallets!!! They just burned them. How silly. Now I want to gather more and create a wall like yours. Thanks for the inspiration! I hope you and the feline have a less frenzied week.

    1. your bookcase sounds lovely! those oak pallets are harder to come by these days...mostly pine, birch and beech anymore...but still, they pop up from time to time! i would love to see pics of your bookcase (and your wall if you decide to go forward with it). it seems most folks are not as marble-free when it comes to these walls and will do one as an accent wall. but, since my place is small and exceedingly rustic already, i'm hoping to gather enough to do them all! hence the potential need for those butterfly net toting men!

    1. i just saw a wonderful lap desk made from pallets. sadly, the designer decided to sand the heck out of it all so you could no longer tell that it was pallet wood...nor was there any of the lovely patina left. when i finish my walls, i may have to try my hand at building one. i love lap desks!
